Toronto, ON – A severe windstorm is currently battering the Greater Toronto Area, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Winds are coming from the south and reportedly strongest near Lake Ontario. Reports of flying debris and minor damage are coming in from across the city, prompting officials to warn residents to remain indoors where possible.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning earlier today, and damage from strong winds has been reported in areas such as Liberty Village and Yonge-Dundas Square, including downed branches and unsecured objects. Local authorities are responding to several incidents, but no serious injuries have been reported so far.

Weather Outlook: Winds are expected to remain strong throughout the early afternoon, but will gradually ease, with gusts dying down further by 2:00 PM. Residents are advised to secure loose items and avoid unnecessary outdoor travel as scattered debris and and falling objects may still pose hazards.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.

Crane swinging dangerously near Union Station amidst wind storm

Toronto, ON – A large construction crane at a construction project located at the corner of Bay Street and Harbour Street, just south of the Gardiner Expressway, is swaying dangerously as strong winds blow in from the lake, causing concern among local officials and residents. While cranes are designed to sway to some extent, this crane is reportedly 'swaying out of control' and appears to be unstable, with concerns that it might collapse. Officials have arrived on-scene and cleared the main intersection.

Reports of flying debris from the same construction site have also surfaced, further escalating safety concerns. There are also reports that some vehicles are stopping on the Gardner to watch the spectacle. The windstorm, with gusts blowing in from the south, is expected to continue into the afternoon. Authorities are warning nearby residents and commuters to stay clear of the area until further notice.

This is not the first time Toronto has experienced crane issues. Just two weeks ago, a crane crane collapsed in Toronto's Leaside area on October 17 of this year. 2020 also saw a string of crane collapses, including: a July collapse at the new TD office construction site at 160 Front Street,  the August 2020 crane collapse across a major intersection in downtown Toronto, and the November 2020 Eglington Crosstown LRT project crane collapse. These incidents resulted in a range of issues in the past, including large-scale evacuations, shelter-in-place situations and some injuries. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹As the construction crane capital of North America, Toronto currently has more cranes dotting the skyline than the rest of the continent combined. â€‹We’ll keep track of this story and keep you updated….
